You mean a referendum making the entire charter void? Or just something to the effect of taking the power from the SOGP? I would be more than happy to do just that. Thanks for the heads-up, Claudette. How does one go about getting this started? Just type up the thing and circulate it for signatures? What is the ratio to make it pass? Hey, let's do this! The time for talk is over. I am all for making some drastic changes ... I plan to be here for years to come. It would be nice to live in a thriving, productive city. There's plenty of mind-power and man(woman)-power to get this done with the handful of regulars here and on Moe's forum.

Ordinance and/or City Charter can be removed this way. Personally, I think the City Charter is gonna take a lot more educating the public first before they will go for such a drastic change.
As I said before, probably the best place to start would be the Concerned Citizens Group.
The following was copied from their site:
The next Concerned Citizen's Meeting will be this Saturday, February 10th, 2007 at Giovanni's Pizza.
1925 Eleventh St.
Portsmouth

Dinner at 6:00pm
Meeting at 7:00pm

Hope to see you there.

*The city council meeting is Monday, [sign in to see URL].

By the way, I don't know how involved you have been in the local government and it's reform.
While reading these forums will enlighten you a little as to what some of the corruption is that's been going on, you still need to attend some of the City Council meetings, get to know the "players," read up on what action has already been taken, etc.
Attending the upcoming CCG meeting will also help you in that area.
There are several people who are, and have been, involved in this "movement" for quite some time. It's not a quick fix kinda thing.
Lee Scott is another individual who can provide you with a wealth of information. He will be at the Columbia tonight and probably tomorrow night.
I don't want to squelch your [sign in to see URL]'s much [sign in to see URL] your homework needs to be done, too emoticon

Re: WHAT SHOULD CITY COUNCIL DO TO BETTER OUR CITY?

I've got a lot to learn. I will be the first to admit that. Those that don't ask questions never get answers. I have read the charter now in its entirety but that's something that has to be studied, read then read again and again to really get a grasp and understanding of ...

I have not been involved at all in local government and it's reform but now is as good a time as any to get started. We can put our differences aside for the betterment of our area. Removing the entire charter is probably not gonna happen. City government based solely on referendum would be very tedious I know. So where do we go from here? Do we need a new charter? Or just amend the current?

To my understanding, the SOGP was created by only one referendum. Am I right? If so, why can't we just overturn that or supercede it with something totally different? I would assume that's what you mean, Claudette. Trying damn hard to play catch-up and 'do my homework' .... But the only way to learn is ask and the best place to get answers are from the people who have already been there. I appreciate all the replies and info. I cannot make the meeting on Saturday ... when is the next meeting? I would like to at least sit-in and soak up what I can.

YOU ARE ALL RIGHT BUT THE ONLY WAY TO SOLVE OUR PROBLEM IS TO GET OUT AND VOTE FOR THE PEOPLE WHO ARE GOING TO HELP THE PEOPLE AND OUR CITY AND NOT THE ONES THAT ARE IN THERE NOW RAPEING OUR CITY AND THE PEOPLE FOR THIER OWN BENEFIT AND LINING THIER OWN POCKETS!! THE ONLY ONE THAT IS ON COUNCIL NOW THAT IS FOR THE PEOPLE AND I TRUST WHOLEHEARTEDLY IS BOB MOLLETTE!! BY DANNY B.

Good point, Danny.
Look, as far as homework, a good place to catch up on what the "people" have been doing is the CCG site at [sign in to see URL] and 3rd Ward Councilman, Bob Mollette's site at [sign in to see URL]
Both these sites are chocked full of archived information. On the CCG site, look to the right of the page for the archived information. It'll take you a little while to do this reading, but it's well worth your time.

In the meantime, let's tackle that City Council!

What Ward are you in, look? If you're not sure, e-mail me at curlyraye@[sign in to see URL] , with your screen name in the subject line, and I can look on my Ward maps and tell you. Then you can find out about your candidate and help them.

I actually live in the county so I don't get to vote for council members. But that doesn't mean that their actions don't have a direct affect on me too. It doesn't stop me from getting involved in 'tackling' them either.

Thanks for the links ... I have been to that site a few times, mostly to read the timeline of the Martings' deal and have been to the forum a couple times too. I will be sure to check out the archived info from there too.
